The LivOn Labs Story
by Les Nachman
Every day we get requests to tell our story... how did LivOn Labs get started? Where did the idea of liposome-encapsulating vitamin C come from?
Well the truth is, this is really one unusual company. Unusual in the sense that it wouldn't even exist if I hadn't been at death's door just a few years ago.
How It All Started
I started in the mail order business in 1959 and stayed in it on and off until 1988 when I began manufacturing and marketing food supplements full time. My business partner and I developed several extremely successful companies and life was good. Then, in the late 1990's, I developed heart disease. By 2003, it was so bad that my doctors were suggesting a heart transplant as a last resort, and advising me to get my affairs in order.
Faced with the prospect of orthodox medicine giving up on me, I now turned to unorthodox medicine. I knew that beyond the stifling, reactionary world of allopathic (drug-dependent) medicine lay realms of healing almost beyond imagination. Disciplines, modalities and methods that had withstood the test of time and handed down to us through the ages were everywhere. If one looks hard enough and far enough, the realization will come that for every sickness, disease, illness, and malady of any kind, someone somewhere has treated it or is treating it successfully.
My personal search led me to two extraordinary MD's in California. One, a world renowned virologist and epidemiologist, and the other, a maverick cardiologist who had been experimenting with alternative methods of treating sick hearts for a long time. The first and foremost thing I learned from both of these doctors is that a damaged heart can be repaired, or at least the progression of the disease can be slowed down or stopped. The next thing I learned is that a holistic approach is essential.
My new course of therapy included many unusual substances, dietary changes, exercise, etc. All of this ultimately brought me back to life and started my recovery, a process that continues to this day, but the most notable thing my doctors did was introduce me to massive doses of vitamin C intravenously (IV).
Vitamin C Saved my Life
Like most people, I thought vitamin C was something you get from orange juice that only helps you if you get a cold. I soon learned that vitamin C in high doses was one of the best, most broad-spectrumed nutrients known to man. It is also an incredibly powerful antioxidant, it is absolutely essential for the synthesis of collagen and certain neurotransmitters, and the list goes on and on.*
All of this information convinced me that this was the most underrated natural substance on the face of the planet. So I started reading the works of the great pioneers in vitamin C research. Men like Dr. Linus Pauling, Dr. Robert Cathcart, Dr. Matthias Rath, and Dr. Thomas Levy showed me that the problem with high dose vitamin C is that almost no one can take a therapeutic dose orally without experiencing gastric distress, and most commonly, diarrhea. Most people start having difficulty at just 3-4 grams, and even if someone can tolerate higher doses of vitamin C, studies show that 10 - 12 grams taken at once results in only about 1 or even less than 1 gram actually being absorbed. The rest migrates to the colon, and since it's highly acidic, the vitamin C attracts water from the body and causes diarrhea.
It seemed obvious to me that oral ingestion of vitamin C is not the answer. IV-vitamin C is the answer, but impractical for the average person because of the cost of the treatment, the time involved and the difficulty of finding an MD to administer it.
In conversations with the physicians taking care of me, it was hypothesized that if a method of delivering vitamin C orally could be developed that would deliver almost total bioavailability without the usual gastric distress or diarrhea, then people could at least avail themselves of some of the wondrous benefits of high-dose vitamin C. It was not envisioned that such a product would replace IV-vitamin C, but it would bridge the gap between basically ineffective oral vitamin C and totally effective IV-vitamin C.
This concept began a thought process in my mind that grew and grew, and because of the ongoing benefits of high dose vitamin C that I was experiencing, it eventually became an obsession.
Few people have the time and the resources to pursue an obsession, but I had recently sold my business interests and was in essence retired. After all, I was expecting to die. Since that eminent fate seemed less likely, I made the decision to pursue the goal of bringing bio-available vitamin C to everyone.
Liposome Encapsulation Technology - The Answer
The science of liposomal encapsulation technology (LET) dates back to the 1980's, when most of the relevant patents were issued. It was initially created and used by pharmaceutical companies as a method to deliver drugs to specific organs or locations in the body, without gastric juices acting on them and compromising the integrity, strength or structure of the drug. It was also important that all of the drug be absorbed into the blood through the small intestine, with little or none of it reaching the bowel. As time passed, much broader and practical uses for this technology were developed, including topical applications for medicines as well as cosmetics.
The secret of successful uses of LET is to produce a liposome encapsulated molecule so small that it is absorbed immediately after leaving the stomach, preferably just below the duodenum, at the beginning of the small intestine. This is easier said than done. Every different substance that you try to liposome presents its own set of challenges and you have to select the right combination of phospholipids and other ingredients to perfect the formula that will work. For a thorough explanation of this science and process, read PC Liposomal Encapsulation by Dr. Robert Milne. Anyway, it was this technology that provided all the answers for me.
Almost two years of trial and error produced the product I was dreaming about - Lypo-SphericTM Vitamin C.
The product's many virtues and benefits are described elsewhere on this site. Suffice it to say it is the best way to take vitamin C there is - ongoing scientific trials already verify this. Our logos are trademarked and our unique packaging and formulation process is patent pending. But even with thousands of people all over the world using it regularly, I don't feel I've scratched the surface of public awareness, and so the beat goes on.
My heart is getting stronger all the time and as long as it continues to do so, I will never stop trying to tell everyone I can about this amazing way to take this marvelous vitamin.
Vitamin C is God's gift to you. I'm just a messenger.
